GOOD SPACING WHEN HANDLING KICKS

Good Spacing is very important in executing kicks


If you observe Karate and Taekwondo exponents sparing, you may notice that many of their kicks do not connect. This may be due to their being accustomed to no-contact fighting. But in a real fight, this will be bad spacing. Muay Thai fighters are different. Their kicks as well as punches always connect.

Good spacing when executing kicks is explained in this video series. You will also learn how to bridge the gap when your opponent moves back, and how to move in to kick if you have earlier retreated. The difference in reach between a punch and a kick is noted, and an excellent footwork maneuver is explained.

Bridge the Gap if your Opponent has Moved Away

Andy initiates with double kicks. Eugene Butterworth dodges and counters with another kick. If an opponent has moved back, you have to move forward in order to connect. Many martial artists neglect this aspect of spacing. Reversely, if you wish to counter attack after you have moved back, you must move forward to bridge the gap, otherwise your attack will not reach your opponent.

Moving Diagonally Forward to Strike your Opponent

The mechanics of spacing is important. If you move back to avoid an opponent's attack, you cannot reach him in your counter-attack if you remain at your position. You have to move diagonally forward to reach him. If you just move sideway, you may also not reach him.

Working out Correct Spacing Before Combat

If an opponent attacks you with his hand, you may lean back to avoid his hand strike and simultaneously counter with a kick. Your kick can reach him but his hand strike cannot reach you. But if he kicks at you and you move back, your kick will be unable to reach him. However, if you move back to a False-Leg Stance to avoid his kick, and kick him with your back leg, your kick can connect. You have to work out such spacing aspects before actual combat, so that during combat you can move to the correct spacing without thinking.

Right Spacing and Good Coverage

Eugene is able to have right spacing for his counter-attacks. Notice that he pulls back his front leg to avoid Andy's kicks, and kicks with his back leg which can connect. He also moves forward diagonally to counter-attack with his hands. Notice that he covers Andy to prevent Andy from striking back.

Differentiating between Opponent's Hand or Leg Attack

After two initial kicks, Andy moves in with a left thrust punch. Eugene leans back and kicks with his front leg, which can reach the opponent. Had Andy attacked with a kick instead of a punch, after moving back Eugene would not reach his opponent with his front leg. If he wishes to counter with a kick, he has to use his back leg.

Advantages of Stances in Spacing and Timing

Eugene demonstrates some excellent footwork and body-movement in his counters. This is possible because of his stances. Had Eugene been bouncing about like a Boxer or Kick-Boxer, he would be unable to have these advantages over his opponent. He would also be slower without the advantage of footwork and body-movement due to the stances. Notice also the difference in reach between an opponent's hand attack and leg attack.

An Excellent Footwork Maneuver

As Daniel attacks with a kick, George moves diagonally forward to counter-attack, then puts Daniel onto the ground under control. This is a very useful footwork maneuver against almost any attacks. If you spend some time to master this maneuver, you will find it very effective in combat.
