TRAPPING LEGS AND SUBDUING OPPONENTS

shaolin kung fu

Steve applies “Old Monk Clamp Wood” to subdue an opponent who kicks

You can render an opponent quite helpless when he kicks if you can trap his kicking leg and subdue him onto the ground. Some effective techniques for this purpose are shown in this video series.

The patterns employed are “Panda Hugs Tree”, “Old Monk Clamps Wood” and “Double Dragons Cross Step”. Good judgment, good timing and good spacing are necessary.

Panda Hugs Tree

“shaolin

As Andy executes a high kick, Steve traps the kicking leg using the pattern “Panda Hugs Tree”, and put the opponent onto the ground giving him no chance to escape. Steve can then finish off the opponent in numerous ways. But of course, a skillful Shaolin practitioner can escape. There is no such a thing as an insurmountable technique in Shaolin Kungfu.

Good Timing and Spacing are Necessary

“shaolin

Steve shows the application of “Panda Hugs Tree” from another angle. Good timing and spacing are necessary. If you were caught in this difficult position, what would you do to escape or even turn the table around?

Old Monk Clamps Wood

“shaolin

This is another interesting counter against the kick which is as beautiful to watch as it is difficult for an opponent to escape from. Andy executes continuous sweeping kicks. After brushing off the first kick, Steve trap the kicking leg using the pattern “Old Monk Clamps Wood”. Notice that Steve deflects the kick, not block it head-on.

Becoming Helpless as Soon as he Kicks

“shaolin

Steve shows the “clamping wood” technique from a different angle. Notice that he brushes away the kick following its momentum and intercept the leg at the thigh where it is not forceful. If you practice this technique 30 times a day for 6 months until you are very skillful at its application, an opponent will find himself quite helpless as soon as he kicks.

Moving in According to Opponent's Momentum

“shaolin

Eugene Butterworth avoids the first round-house kick, then moves in following the opponent's momentum as he executes the second reverse round-house, using the pattern “Double Dragons Cross Step”. There is no need to rush in the application of this technique because the opponent's reverse round-house is technically slow.

Giving Opponent No Chance to Counter

“shaolin

Eugene demonstrates again the application of “Double Dragons Cross Step” against a reverse round-house. You must be close to the opponent as you move in, giving him no chance to counter-strike. If he tries to escape by moving forward, follow him closely and strike him from behind.
