MAKING EXPEDIENT CHANGES TO SURPRISED ATTACKS

Plant Willow in Front of Camp

Taekwondo kicks are quite straight-forward, but Muay Thai kicks are tricky. When an opponent executes a right sweeping kick to your left side, you may move to your right side to counter-attack. But a Muay Thai fighter is agile enough to suddenly change his attack and gives you a left sweeping kick.

If you are close, he may hold your neck and throw continuous knee jabs at your chest or ribs. How would you counter? Grandmaster Wong poses this question to the course participants during a training session.

Moving into Opponent as he Kicks

“shaolin

Can you imagine moving into an opponent as he kicks? Here is a beautiful example called “Plant Willow in Front of Camp”. You move in diagonally, following his kicking momentum. Notice how Adam closes Peter's hands preventing Peter from counter-attacking.

What Would you Do in this Difficult Situation

“shaolin

As Peter executes a right sweeping kick, Adam moves to the other side to throw Peter onto the ground. But Peter is skillful. Immediately he changes to a left sweeping kick. Grandmaster Wong explains that Muay Thai fighters are very versatile. They may hold your head and throws continual left knee jabs into you. What would you do?

When Moving into an Opponent's Kick

“shaolin

Grandmaster Wong asks course participants to come up with a solution in this difficult situation. What would you do if you move into an opponent's kicking leg? Wuji attempts to deflect the kick and counter-strike. But an agile Muay Thai fighter would hold you in close quarters and change his sweeping kick into knee jabs.

Turning the Body with a Flying Sweeping Kick

“shaolin

Sifu Anthony tries to stop the opponent from kicking by striking a low punch into the opponent's dan tian. It is similar to Wuji's earlier attempt. But a Muay Thai fighter would jump up to turn his body to execute a flying sweeping kick, avoiding the punch as well as kicking you.

Golden Cockerel against Muay Thai Knee Jab

“shaolin

Grandmaster Wong explains that if you are too close, the opponent would change his sweeping kick to a knee jab while holding your head with his hands as in Muay Thai. Irrespective of whether the opponent is skillful to do this, you must be prepared for this eventuality. A good counter is “Golden Cockerel Stands Solitarily”.

White Horse Returns Head

“shaolin

Sifu Anthony demonstrates another counter against the possibility of the opponent executing a sweeping kick. Before the opponent moves in for the sweeping kick, you can stop him using the pattern “White Horse Returns Head”, which can not only keep the opponent at arm's length but also injure him with a palm strike.
