LEGACY OF SIGUNG HO FATT NAM -- PLANTING WILLOW IN FRONT OF CAMP

Grandmaster Wong fells his opponent onto the ground and subdues him

This series is a continuation of the previous one. How would you counter if you move into a sweeping kick or a knee strike at close quarters? A number of possibilities are suggested. Grandmaster Wong offers the best solution — the legacy of Sigung Ho Fatt Nam, namely “Planting Willow in Front of Camp”.

Safety First, Not Win at All Cost

“shaolin

If the opponent is too close, using “White Horse Returns Head” is not recommended. Even if you could hit the opponent, you would be hit by him too, and we do not want this to happen. In kungfu philosophy, safety first is of utmost important, and it is not win at all cost as is the philosophy of some other martial arts.

Sigung Ho's Forte against Knee Jabs

“shaolin

When the opponent applies a Muay Thai knee jab at you, an excellent counter is “Plant Willow in Front of Camp”. As he kicks at you with his left knee or shin when you move in, slip your right arm beneath his left thigh and deflect the attack, simultaneously pushing away his hands on your head with your left hand, and fell him onto the ground. This is Sigung Ho's forte against Muay Thai's knee jabs.

Planting Willow in Front of Camp

“Planting Willow in Front of Camp” is an excellent counter against knee strikes and sweeping kicks. Grandmaster Wong reveals some finer points of its application. Minimum force is used to deflect the kick according to its attacking momentum. At the same time you must push away the opponent's hands on your neck.

Felling Opponent with his own Momentum

“shaolin

The finer points of “Planting Willow in Front of Camp” are shown in some details here. Notice that Grandmaster Wong fells Peter almost effortlessly because he uses the opponent's momentum. Indeed, the harder, the opponent kicks, the easier he falls. Notice also that Grandmaster Wong covers the opponent even when he is on the ground, to prevent any possible surprised strikes.

Be Accustomed with Important Points

“shaolin

It will be even easier to fell the opponent if he has not hold your neck. Notice that Adam guards Peter's free hand while felling him. You have to be so accustomed with these important points in your practice that they come naturally in free combat.

Counter against Reverse Round-House

“shaolin

The reverse round-house is a clumsy kick. As soon as an opponent turns his back to execute the reverse round-house, you can move in to strike him. You need not rush because it takes much time for a reverse round-house to reach you, and you would have struck him before the kick has even traveled half its intended distance. You could also trip the opponent and subdue him on the ground.
