Shaolin Combat Sequences

Combat sequences constitute the core of our combat training. We have three sets of combat sequences to meet different needs - basic, distilled and abridged. When we have sufficient time, like at regular classes or intensive courses, we use 16 basic sequences. When we have less time, like at regional courses and summer camps, we use 8 distilled sequences. When time is limited, like at introductory and preparatory courses, we use 4 abridged sequences.

It is significant to note that the progression is from 16 sequences to 8 sequences to 4 sequences, and not the other way round. In other words, we start with 16 sequences, distill them into 8, and further abridge them into 4. It is not that we start with 4, but finding them inadequate we increase them to 8, then add further to 16. Hence, as they are the essence, our 4 abridged combat sequences are complete by themselves; students trained in just these four sequences are able to handle all the different categories of attack.

Taijiquan Combat Sequences

Taijiquan is an internal martial art. This means that a Taijiquan practitioner should have internal force and be able to apply Taijiquan patterns for combat.

Combat sequences form the core of our Taijiquan combat training. We have three sets of Taijiquan combat sequences - basic, distilled and abridged - which are complete by themselves. When we have sufficient time, like at regular classes and intensive courses, we learn 12 combat sequences. When we have less time, as in regional courses and summer camps, the 12 sequences are distilled into 8 sequences. When time is limited, as in introductory and preparatory courses, the 8 sequences are abridged into 4 sequences. As they are complete, even students who learn only the 4 abridged sequences will be able to handle all the four categories of attack.

The Teaching of Sifu Wong Kiew Kit

Sifu

A Shaolin disciple, for example, is trained to be courteous and considerate, brave and righteous, assess problems and situations with calmness and clarity, and attend to duties with zest and loyalty. While the philosophy of many martial arts mainly focuses on how to be stoic and hurt the opponent, Shaolin philosophy teaches gentleness and a love for life. The twin pillars of Shaolin philosophy are compassion and wisdom.

Intensive Courses

Conducted in English at Sungai Petani or Penang, Malaysia, unless otherwised stated, by Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit

Fees are payable at the start of the course. Anyone not satisfied with the course will have a full refund without question if he or she informs the organizer about his or her dissatisfaction at least one hour before the course completes.

The most important requirement for participating in any of these courses is to follow and be abided by The Ten Shaolin Laws. Please read these Ten Shaolin Laws carefully before you consider applying. If you are interested to attend any of the courses, please apply to the Secretary as soon as possible, and details will be e-mailed to you if your application is accepted.

The intensive courses are very intensive. If you are not ready to work hard, both during the course as well as in your own post-course training, please don't apply for the courses.

The intensive courses are NOT suitable for AIDS patients and those who are HIV positive. If you wish to know the reasons, please refer to Question-Answer 22 of the May 1999 Part 1 question-answer series.

Quotations from Discussions

To me, sunshine is just a state of mind.
Richard Blank, Shaolin Wahnam Costa Rica.

Its nice to know the weather can't spoil your day . I do appreciate through being a student at Shaolin Wahnam that if you have true peace, joy and happiness in your heart, external factors such as money, weather, the late bus etc. cannot influence your joyful and happy state of mind.

If on the other hand your joy and happiness depends on these external factors, then it is natural your joy and happiness would change with these external elements.

Kindest regards

Martin (smiling through the miserable London weather),
