Chi flow
Question 1
How long does it take a new student to attain a chi kung state of mind and a chi flow?
— George, USA
Answer
Because of my skills to transfer the attainment of a chi kung state of mind and a chi (or energy) flow to new students, they can attain both the chi kung state of mind and a chi flow within the first hour.
In my early years of teaching about 40 years ago (in 1980s), they could attain a chi kung state of mind and a chi flow in a few months. This was very fast. Most people could not attain a chi kung state of mind; they only performed gentle, physical exercise using external chi kung forms.
But I have about 100 classes a year; most masters have their classes follow them. So I have a lot of opportunities to transmit the skills to new students, especially when I differentiated between skills and techniques. Most masters do not differentiate between skills and techniques; they resume that if they follow the techniques they will achieve the result.
By attaining a chi kung class, either regional or intensive, new students can attain a chi kung state of mind and generate a chi flow within the first hour. "A chi kung state of mind" was coined by the great Sifu Yan Xin of China. It is known in English as entering into a high state of consciousness.
Entering into a chi kung state of mind is very important. Otherwise, chi kung practitioners practice gentle, physical exercise using external chi kung forms, and they normally do not realize it.
Question 2
Why is generating a chi flow fast?
— Chen, Hong Kong
Answer
A chi (or energy) flow is the essence of chi kung.
Many people take a long time to generate a chi flow, a matter of years. Most people cannot generate a chi flow. They have not entered into a chi kung state of mind. They practice chi kung as gentle, physical exercise, and they are unaware of it.
A good analogy is Taijiquan, usually written as "Tai Chi Chuan" in English. They have no internal force which contributes to good health, and they cannot use their Taijiquan patterns for combat.

It seems that it is getting worst over the CNY celebration. Many people in the world are seriously affected by the covid 19. I just wonder what could we do as Shoalin practitioners to help people during this trying time.
Sifu, may be you could advise whether it is wise to offer people to learn chi kung free of charge online? Or just leave it and let the incident take it course? Look forward to hear from you and thank you in advance for your advice.
Answer
While in Malaysia the disease has hit over 9 thousand, it will soon be over. The world will be open and business is back to normal.
While you still carry on your business, you will focus on giving health and happiness to others, especially in maintaining good health. The super-rich can easily afford and you will prosper. You should not offer chi kung free of charge. The super-rich have to pay for it, which they can easily afford. It is nice to revert to maintaining health, and performing chi kung every day is an effective way to maintain health. The Holistic Health Culturation Centre will become very famous.

Question 8
Should I continue to practice getting my right arm at the same level of force as my left?
Answer
It is alright if your left arm and your right arm are at the same level of power. Things are quite different now. In the past, masters did not train their left arm because they might cause harm unconsciously.
To get your right hand at the same level as your left is to train. Try this. Train your left hand, say, 5 times. Train your right hand 10 times. Then compare the two hands.
