EIGHT DISTILLED SHAOLIN COMBAT SEQUENCES
The basic 16 Shaolin combat sequences in our sparring methodology are shortened or distilled into 8 combat sequences shown in this video series. They cover all the four categories of striking, kicking, felling and gripping. These 8 combat sequences are formalized in the set "Single Tiger Emerges from Cave". A picture series and a video series of this set can be accessed here and here respectively.
These 8 combat sequences are structured in the same way as the 8 distilled combat sequences in Wahnam Taijiquan, which are formalized in the Wahnam Taijiquan Yellow Bee Sucks Pollens set. Hence, Shaolin and Taijiquan students can use these two sets as basis for their sparring practice.
Combat Sequences of Single Tiger Emerges from Cave
The names of the 8 sequences are as follows
- Top, Middle, Bottom
- Side Attack
- Continuous Attacks
- Double Kicks
- Whirlwind Kick
- Felling Attack
- Chopping Attack
- Gripping Attack
The middle, top and bottom strikes are implemented in the patterns "Black Tiger Emerges from Cave", "Poisonous Snake Shoots Venom" and "Precious Duck Swims through Lotus" respectively.
The initiator attacks with "Fierce Tiger Speeds through Valley". After deflecting the initial attack, the responder counters with a side attack using "Hang a Golden Star at a Corner".
Both the initiator and the responder use the tactic of continuous attacks. Notice that they cover themselves well before continuing their attack.
Using double kicks in continuous attacks is a formidable tactic. Many people can be caught by surprise.
A whirlwind kick is a powerful attack. A good counter is to avoid it and strike the kicking leg.
The initiator attempts to fell the responder using "Fell Tree with Roots". The responder steps over the attacker's leg and counters with a whirlwind kick.
What would you do if your opponent pulls you down and simultaneously chops at your head? You can neutralize his attack and counter with an organ-seeking kick.
An opponent grips your hand and chops at your head. Using body-movement you can neutralize his attack and grip his hand in return.
