Usually they are unaware that they are not practicing chi kung, which is an energy exercise, although they use chi kung techniques. Chi kung is energy exercise, but more than 80% of chi kung practitioners all over the world perform gentle physical exercise, though they call it chi kung. The remaining practitioners may practice genuine chi kung, but it is of a low-level which gives them some sense of well-being if they are already healthy. If they are sick or lack vitality, their chi kung may not be able to overcome their illness or give them strength.

Today most chi kung practitioners practice gentle physical exercise using chi kung techniques but not genuine chi kung, and they are not aware of the fact. As an analogy, most Taijiquan practitioner today practice the external form of Taijiquan, which we call Taiji dance. Taijiquan is a wonderful internal martial art, but there is nothing internal, and nothing martial in what most people practice.

The terms commonly used in Chinese are “kai xin” which means “happy”, “hou yun qi” which means “good luck”, “fa bei qi” which means “being temperamental”, and “da tan” which means “being brave”.

Actually, word or word, “kai xin” is “open heart”, “hou yun qi” is "good circulation of energy”, “fa bei qi” is “manifest spleen energy”, and “da tan” is “big gall bladder”. But when you ask a Chinese what “kai xin” is, he will tell you that it means “happy”, and so on.

Over-training

I went through my training the long, hard way. Hence I had time to develop my skills, which was over many years. I also had four of the best teachers I ever could have, and they taught me their best.

It took me about 17 years to have internal force, about 20 years to have my chi flow, and about 25 years before I could comfortably defeat professional fighters and masters.
