SHAOLIN COUNTERS AGAINST KICK-BOXING AND KARATE
It is easy to bring a Kick-Boxer onto the ground as he kicks. Of course we can also bring him onto the ground when he is not kicking. Two examples are shown in this video series. Another effective way is to cover and strike him.
For methodical training, some common ways a Karate exponent typically attacks are formalized into sequences. Two effective ways of handling a Karate exponent are shown here. One way is to tempt him to attack and then kick him. Another way is to intercept his punches and counter-strike.
Bringing Down a Kick-Boxer
Innes demonstrates some effective counters against a Kick-Boxer posed by Molly. Molly initiates with a thrust kick, followed by two jabs, which are common ways of Kick-Boxing opening. Innes avoids the initial kick, intercepts the first jab, covers the second jab and brings the opponent onto the ground. Innes is Bigge in sized than Molly, but in kungfu size is not a decisive factor. Had the roles been reversed, Molly could as easily bring down Innes.
Making Modification According to Opponent's Changing Movements
As Innes fells Molly, she tries to prevent the fall by neutralizing Innes' leverage advantage. But Innes follows up with an appropriate modification and fells Molly nevertheless. Making a modified attack according to an opponent's changing movements is hallmark of a master.
Moving in to Cover and Strike
Here is another common sequence of attacks commonly used by Kick-Boxers. It is a slight modification of the sequence in the previous video. Molly, who poses as a Kick-Boxer, initiates with two jabs, followed with a kick. Innes brushes off the jabs and wards off the kick. Immediately he moves in to cover Molly's hands and strike her.
Formalizing Attacks into Fixed Sequences for Methodical Training
Grandmaster Wong shows two attack sequences many Karate exponents would use in combat. Notice that the stances used by Grandmaster Wong here are not kungfu stances. While opponents fight randomly in real situations, their attacks are formalized into fixed sequences for methodical training. When we are familiar with the fixed sequences, we can release the fixed arrangement for free movements.
Difference between Karate and Shaolin
There is a contrast between typical defence patterns in Karate with those in Shaolin Kungfu. Shaolin Kungfu patterns are more circular and softer, and from our perspective, are far more effective. Karate practitioners, of course, would disagree.
Shaolin Kungfu is Characteristically Different from Karate
Grandmaster Wong suggests another Karate sequence of attack. It includes a round-house kick and two thrust punches. Grandmaster Wong reminds the audience not to mistake what he has shown as Shaolin Kungfu, which is characteristically different though it may look similar to the uninitiated.
Not Meeting Force with Force
Eugene Siterman attacks Molly with Karate techniques. Molly brushes away the attack gently and counter attack with a side kick. Notice that Molly does not meet force against force. Grandmaster Wong also shows a deadly counter against a Karate punch.
Immortal Emerges from Cave
Molly counter-attacks as Eugene, posing as a Karate exponent, moves in to attack. Grandmaster Wong reminds Molly to take care of an opponent's forward hand while striking him. If he attacks with his other hand, an excellent counter is “Immortal Emerges from Cave”.
