THE DRAGON-FORM SET OF NORTHERN SHAOLIN
Many people think that it is necessary to be hard to be powerful. This is not necessary so. The Dragon Form Set manifests much internal force yet it is soft and flowing. In fact, a master of the Dragon force can be so powerful that he can damage opponents by an apparently gentle flick of any part of his body!
This set was taught to Grandmaster Wong in his young days by his siheng, Por Lok, in Grandmaster Ho Fatt Nam's lineage in exchange for the Tiger-Crane Set. His siheng learned this Dragon Form Set not from Grandmaster Ho but from another teacher. Nevertheless, Grandmaster Wong derived the internal force and understood the combat application of the set as a result of his training with Grandmaster Ho.
The Dragon Form Set is from Northern Shaolin. The patterns are simple, but the application profound.
Generating Internal Force at Start of Set
After the salutation pattern, Peter performs “Dragon Dragons Emerge from Sea” to generate internal force at the start of set. The stance used here is the “Two-Character Stance”, not the Horse-Riding Stance normally used in other sets.
Many Patterns in One Smooth Sequence
The patterns here are “Lohan Asks the Way”, “Traveling Dragon Plays with Water” (twice), “Green Dragon Shoots Pearl”, “Move Body Little Jump”, “Submerged Dragon Subdues Sea Monster”, “Comet Chases Away Moon” (twice), “Old Dragon Squats on Ground” (twice), “Black Panther Rushes at Food”, “Rising Dragon Galloping Tiger” and “”Fierce Tiger Speeds Through Valley”. All these patterns should be performed in a smooth sequence.
Manifesting Miraculous Internal Force
This special pattern is called “Dragon Manifests Miraculous Majesty” and as its name implies, is used to manifest powerful internal force. Here Grandmaster Wong shows Peter how to manifest force. Of course, merely knowing the technique is inadequate to manifest force; one must have internal force to manifest. This pattern has also combat applications.
Not just Perform Patterns, but Manifest Force
The patterns here are “Dragon Manifests Miraculous Majesty”, “Second Brother Chops Rock”, “Separate Leaves Search Flowers”, “Black Tiger Steals Heart” and “One Finger Shoot Zen”. Grandmaster Wong reminds Peter not just to perform the patterns, but to manifest force
Traveling Dragon in Flowing Breeze
The patterns are “Golden Dragon Circulate Pillar”, “Golden Dragon Looks at Sun”, “Bar the Big Boss”, “Single Strike Bell Sounds” (twice), “Dark Phoenix Nods Head” (twice), “Cannon Punch Towards Sky” (twice), “White Crane Flaps Wings” (twice), “Dark Dragon Draws Water” (twice), “Angry Leopard Charges at Fire” (twice), “Dragon Manifests Miraculous Majesty”, “Second Brother Chops Rock”, “Dragon and Tiger Appears”, “Two Tigers at Ready”, “Focus Chi at Dan Tian” and “Flowing Breeze Swaying Willows”. This completes the Dragon Form Set.
Flowing and Powerful Movements
Grandmaster Wong explains and demonstrates to Peter the flowing movement of the pattern “Dark Phoenix Nods Head” in its combat application. Flowing yet very powerful movements are characteristics of the Dragon set.
